11:25 AM Eastern Time – Text from Stephanie Evergreen
Full house for your session. Is your co-presenter still coming?
Ugh!!! I totally cancelled that a long time ago with AEA.
So Crystal isn’t coming?
Right.
Is there a projector? Maybe you can feed me in.
5 minutes notice, no preparation…
So I originally planned to attend #Eval19 this year. I had a pre-conference workshop accepted and a shorter presentation accepted for the main conference.
But then I was laid off.
With the uncertainty that comes with any layoff, the lack of financial support that comes with being unemployed, and the fact that my old employer is currently the association president, I decided to cancel. So I communicated that to evaluation association on August 1st.
But for some administrative reason, 2 and a half months later there was a room full of people waiting to hear from me…
Pro tip for #Eval2019 attendees: come to #dataviz sessions early! Itβs standing room only at Creative Reporting for a Digital World with @clysy ?? pic.twitter.com/BOmAslfgR4

The show must go on.
Lucky for me, I had friends in the room. Stephanie Evergreen and Sheila Robinson were able to moderate and pull me up on the projector.
I couldn’t see the audience and I couldn’t remember the session I had proposed. But now all of a sudden I knew there was a room full of people staring at me, so I presented…
With the help of Stephanie’s texts I presented on the topic of creative digital reporting. Then, following a brief presentation, I took questions. All via text and chat.
I don’t think it was my best presentation, but I did receive positive feedback. And now I’ll have another presentation story to share for years to come.

One of the cool things about doing it via webinar, the presentation was recorded. You can check it out by hitting the play button below (or visiting my crowdcast profile).

Great seat of the pants session. I was there sitting on the floor somewhere. Thank you!

Thank you Ione, I’m definitely glad I could deliver something of value! I seriously have always hated no-shows.
Sheila B Robinson says
That was a lot of fun and you were a champ for coming through for 100 people! So glad you turned this into a blog post!
Chris Lysy says
Thank you Sheila π
Needed a spot to share links from the discussion, plus it’s a fun story!

Thanks for posting this! I tried in vain to go to a number of data viz sessions and was really looking forward to yours. I got turned away at the door – wish I had stuck around! I appreciate you posting this. Great job!
