You know that whole creative workshop for data people thing that I started? I’ve come to the realization that if I want it to be successful, I need to give it everything I’ve got.
So freshspectrum’s going to go quiet for a bit. Not sure for how long, so we’ll just say a bit for now.

I really believe that good data visualization, good reporting and good presentations are all about good storytelling. So I tend to search out inspiration from great storytellers. I read the post I quote below a few years ago, but find myself coming back to it over and over again.
As researchers and evaluators we spend a lot of time really thinking about what we want to tell an audience. We spend far too little time thinking about what they would like to hear. Then we wonder why they don’t read our reports.
The 22 rules of storytelling, according to Pixar:
#2: You gotta keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a writer. They can be v. different.
Today’s inspiration comes from IDEO.org’s designkit. It’s one of 7 mindsets that lie at the core of their human-centered design process. You can also hear it spoken in context by Krista Donaldson in a short video on the designkit site. Here’s the quote:
