From easy-to-ignore to hard-to-forget.
I get it, I also used to write reports that nobody read.
Before I was a designer I was a data guy. I spent the first half of my career working on big federal research and evaluation projects that get shared using restricted-use datasets and long pdfs.
But my real education on how information spreads came from blogging, drawing comics, and sharing my work over the last 15+ years. I’ve turned those lessons into frameworks that I use every day with my clients. It’s also the foundation for my custom workshops.

Virtual Half-Day Workshops
I am exclusively a virtual teacher. All of my workshops are taught live via Zoom (or your preferred video tool).
My most common format is what I call a virtual half-day. It includes two planned 90 minute sessions and one open 60 minute private office hours session. The price of a virtual half-day is $5,000 for up to 25 participants.
1 – Useful Dissemination Strategy
Together we’ll work through building a measurable dissemination strategy that actually works in the digital age using my Theory of Use framework.
2 – Everyday Visual Reports
Learn how to design and structure my “big-four” visual reports; one-pagers, infographics, blog posts, and slidedocs. Taught using Canva.
3 – Effective Data Storytelling
We’ll dig into a couple of my favorite storytelling frameworks you can use to create engaging reports and presentations.
4 – Compelling Qualitative Data Visualization
I’ll show you how to improve the accessibility of text heavy reports through illustration (using my O.S.E.E. framework).
Want to go deeper?
Workshops teach the skills. I also offer longer consulting engagements for teams who want some guidance and hands-on support. The projects I take on generally fall into one the following three categories.
1 – Capacity Building – For example, since 2020 I have been leading an evaluation community of practice for the CDC’s overdose data to action program. This involves designing and leading regular webinars, teaching workshops, creating training materials, and providing direct technical assistance with state and local jurisdictions.
2 – CoDesign Projects – In these projects I collaborate directly with an evaluation or research team over a longer period of time (usually 2-3 months). We work together to develop a dissemination strategy and design reporting products. The goal is to develop the skills necessary so the team can do this on their own for the next project.
3 – HTML Report Design – Together we adapt your PDF report into an HTML website. Web reports are far more accessible and can serve a much larger audience than your traditional PDF.
