This is a DiY Data Design Action Club tutorial. Today’s design is a dot plot of pre-post data created using Flourish. The final graph is interactive but could also be downloaded for use in static pdfs.
Final Dot Plot
Why this chart?
Dot plots are really efficient charts. You can put multiple data points along a single line, which is great for something like pre-post comparison. This type of format also makes it easy to compare the success of different programs by reading from top to bottom.
This format for a dot plot is also sometimes called a dumbbell chart (for obvious reasons). But you can use a dot plot even if you have more than a couple of points on a line. Such as comparing data broken down by demographic variables (ex. race, gender, grade, etc.).

Where to get the template.
The underlying Flourish template (and sample data) is also available to members of Action Club.
