They don’t like to try new things? Time to double deliver

Cartoon: So this version has a the boring upY things you requested...I also created this second really awesome version that is just much better...so which one do you like?

I work in a pretty conservative company.  But even in a risk-averse climate there are lots of opportunities to do interesting creative work.  The trick to taking risks in these types of environments is to come prepared with a fallback.

I’ve mentioned David Kelley‘s notion of double delivering before in passing (the quote below comes from the video Q&A embedded in that post).  But I double deliver so much that it really deserved its own cartoon.

“You have a client who has an expectation on what you are going to deliver…knock the cover off the ball…do that.

But you can also double deliver.

Young exciting designers have plenty of energy. Do it the way you would like to do it…and deliver that.

Here is the thing you asked for…but look at this…”

    Hey Chris,

Saying “Hi” from the AEA Summer Eval Institute right now and this cartoon is SO what I need for the Effective Reporting workshop. Thank you!

Now I have the correct terminology , “double deliver”. Going to add this to my already bursting slide deck now…

Say hi to everyone for me Kylie! One year maybe I’ll make it down there myself.
